 CAMP REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

Unfortunately, we didn’t reach the required number of registrations by our viability cutoff date, so we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel this year's Jazz Camp. However, if you're interested in joining a Jazz ensemble in Toowoomba, feel free to ask us about TRYO Jazz, which meets regularly on Monday nights.

What is the TRYO Jazz Camp?

A full-day (10am - 5pm) music camp with rehearsals and workshops for three days culminating in a Finale Concert on the Friday evening.

What music will we get to play?

JAZZ!  Anything from the Golden Age of the Swing Band, Jazz Standards and Funky tunes!

Are singers and string players able to be involved?

YES! A great opportunity for orchestral players who want to try something different.

Who can attend?

All upper intermediate and advanced musicians aged 12-22 who are enthusiastic about 3 days playing Jazz!

PLEASE CHECK SKILL LEVEL BELOW FOR SUITABILITY.

Is it only for TRYO members?

No, you don't have to be a TRYO player - you can just come for the camp.

Although, we're sure you'll enjoy yourself so much that you will want to continue the adventure and be part of TRYO's fun-filled year of performances.

Who is the camp for?

All Big Band and orchestral instruments and vocals are welcome:

- Strings, (yes violins at a Jazz Camp!) including bass and electric guitar (jazz chord knowledge essential)

- Winds and Brass

- Drumkit, Mallets (very limited places)

- Vocals

- Piano

NOTE: Limited places are available for bass guitar, guitar and percussion.

What if I play two instruments?

Players can list a second instrument on the registration form after you have listed your preferred one.

This is especially helpful for us to know if, for example,  you play both saxophone and clarinet, or you have both Alto and Tenor Saxes.

What level do you need to be?

The camp can cater for upper intermediate to advanced musicians and singers.

Check with your teacher if you're not sure of your level.

Grade 4/5+ AMEB is required for most 1st parts and solos. A minimum Grade 3 AMEB level for the 2nd/3rd parts.

Grade 5/6 for strings is recommended.

Players should be comfortable playing in all keys up to 4 sharps and 4 flats.

IMPORTANT: Very good ability in sight-reading is highly recommended for this intensive 3-day camp.

Vocalists will need to be able to sing in tune and have experience in part-singing. If you love singing Jazz (or  want to!) this is for you. Being able to read music is a distinct advantage, but not essential if you are a quick learner. Singers will be auditioned during the camp for any solos.

Where is it being held?

The 2024 TRYO Jazz Camp will be held at the Toowoomba City Church at 10a Neil St, Toowoomba.

Who will be the instructors?

The band will directed by TRYO's own music director, Tim Gray.

The singers will be lead by contemporary voice coach,  Michelle Gray , conductor of the Toowoomba Gospel Choir and experienced vocal teacher and performer of over 20 years. Assisting them will be Cody Gray (current vocal student of the Jazz Music Institute Brisbane) and Jeremy Gray (drums, trombone)

What did last years campers say?

"This camp was some of the most fun I've had playing music ever!"

"I got so much out of this camp. Swapping regular scales for jazz scales and improvising really pushed me out of my comfort zone"

Is accomodation available?

This is NOT a sleepover type camp, only day sessions. You'll need to make your own accomodation arrangements.

Who can attend the Finale Concert and how do we book tickets?

We will be holding the concert at 6:30pm on Friday 27th September at the Camp venue.

The concert is open to all family and friends of camp participants, and the general public.

Tickets will soon be available.

What is the cost of the camp?

$110 per player. (inc GST)

An invoice will be issued once the online application form has been submitted and processed by our team.

If places are restricted, an offer will be issued and will need to be accepted before an invoice is issued.

IMPORTANT: The fees are NOT REFUNDABLE.

PLEASE NOTE - LUNCH IS NOT INCLUDED - Please provide your own packed lunch, snacks and water.

This sounds great, how do I sign up?
