What is the Camp?
The Brisbane FANTASTICAL Holiday Music Camp is a full-day (9:00am–4:00pm) non-residential music camp for young musicians.
Over three days of rehearsals (July 2-4, 2025), participants join together to form a full symphony orchestra, working towards a Finale Concert on Friday evening at the historic Old Museum Concert Hall in Bowen Hills, Brisbane.

What Music Will We Play?
This year’s theme is FANTASTICAL. Players will rehearse and perform some of the most iconic and exciting music from well-loved fantasy movie franchises, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon, The Chronicles of Narnia, and more!
Over the three days, the orchestra will typically work through 10-12 pieces, giving participants a diverse and challenging musical experience.

Who Can Attend?
This camp is open to young musicians aged 13 to 24 (or turning 13 this year), from Brisbane and the surrounding regions who meet the minimum skill requirements outlined below.

Minimum Skill Requirements
To ensure a rewarding and successful experience for all participants, the following skill levels are required:
-
Minimum AMEB Grade 3 (or equivalent) playing level
-
AMEB Grade 5+ is expected for lead parts (e.g. first violin, first trumpet) and solo passages
-
Strong sight-reading ability is highly recommended, as we will be covering a large volume of music in a short amount of time
There is no audition required, but we do ask that participants (and their teachers) ensure they meet the minimum requirements before registering.

Which Instruments Can Play in the Camp Orchestra?
We welcome a wide range of orchestral and band instruments, including:
Strings
Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Harp (must bring your own harp)
Woodwinds
Piccolo, Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone
Brass
Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, French Horn, Tuba
Percussion (please note PERCUSSION IS NOW CLOSED for this camp)
-
Tuned percussion (e.g., xylophone, glockenspiel)
-
Untuned percussion (e.g., snare drum, cymbals, auxiliary)
-
Drum Kit (must be able to confidently read drum charts)
Please note: Percussion is now closed

Other Instruments
-
Acoustic guitar, electric bass guitar, and piano are also welcome, but only as second instruments as parts for these are limited.

What if I play more than one instrument?
Players are welcome to list a second (or third) instrument on the registration form.
This is especially helpful for us to know in case we need flexibility in certain sections. For example, a violinist might be willing to play viola if needed, or a brass player might be able to help in another part of the section.

Instruments like piano, acoustic guitar, or electric guitar typically don’t have enough parts to be listed as a main instrument, but you can still include them as a second or third instrument.
